Multilevel Marketing is like a 4 letter word to most people. The MLM industry has gotten a really bad reputation over the years and it’s a shame because it’s one of the best things that ever happened to me.
The reason the MLM industry gets such a bad rap is because too many people pitch a pie in the sky dream where all people have to do is join a company and they will automatically be making a ton of money. People hype up opportunities that are not duplicable and ruin it for the rest of us. You see, many of the companies are really good companies and do have great products and comp plans. But the real problem comes in with duplication. Many of the companies just don’t have a complete system in place to bring new people in and train them how to do the same. The key is having a good system in place so it takes the human factor out of the equation.
People that bash MLM usually really don’t know what they are talking about. How many times have you heard, “Is this one of those pyramid things?” If you ask them what a “pyramid thing” is, they usually can’t even answer you. You see, they just don’t understand the meaning of leverage. J. Paul Getty, one of the first Billionaires, said it best, “I’d rather have 1% of 100 peoples efforts than 100% of my own.” Now that’s the type of leverage that MLM brings to the table. The real fact of the matter is that the standard corporate business structure is a pyramid in itself. You have the owner at the top, then the president and ceo. Next you have upper level managers and then all types of levels until you hit the bottom. The higher you go, the more money they make.
So what’s the difference? The difference is that in MLM the guy at the bottom can get promoted to upper level management by his own efforts and doesn’t have to rely on getting raises and promotions from his boss to be successful. In the corporate world, the ones who get to the top are often the brown-nosers, if you know what I mean. In the MLM industry you can get to the top simply by being a hard worker and being teachable and coachable. The harder you work, the more money you make…as long as you are taught to do it the right way that is.
You want to know the real reason I love MLM though? I work from home and I make twice as much money right now then I ever did in my life! I get to be a full time dad and participate in every part of my kid’s lives without sacrificing a pretty good lifestyle to boot. I can also do this without having to put in 70 hours a week.
What’s there not to love???

1I have come back to this article a few times for inspiration. It is a brilliant account of what MLM means to me as well. Focus, being teachable, and having a great mentor are keys. Thanks Shane!
